Natural Dreadlocks

Have you been thinking about getting dreadlocks for a while but didn't know where to start, who to ask, or if it would 'work' on your hair?

Maybe you've felt a deep inner calling to show who you really are to the world. A more authentic, raw version of yourself. But you've worried about what your boss, your family or friends might say or think.

Have you been on a journey of deep transformation, healing and self discovery, and feel that an external change is part of the process? I've felt all of these things too!

What Method Do I Use?

The Medusa Method of dreadlock creation is my own, signature method that I have developed based on my years of extensive training and experience working with dreadlocks. It is a gentle but thorough backcomb and crochet method, and will be different to what you may have seen or experienced elsewhere.

I start by very carefully sectioning your hair to get the perfect size according to how thick or fine you would like your dreadlocks to be, and also what will work best for your hair.

I backcomb your hair and seal the backcombed dreadlocked with a very gentle crochet technique. Your dreadlocks will be round, straight, a consistent size and look like mature dreads from day one. They will be soft, supple and pliable. They will not be rock hard and inflexible with broken hairs.

This method guarantees that not only will your dreadlocks look amazing on day 1, but they will mature nicely and will maintain their shape without excessive shrinkage, lumps and bumps.

How long does my hair need to be?

To have natural dreadlocks, that is, dreadlocks in your own hair without any extensions being added, I recommend that you have at least shoulder length hair to begin with. Your hair will shrink after being backcombed and you may lose between 1/4 and 1/3 of the original length.

If you have shorter hair than this, or you would like to keep or add to the length, I recommend that you have dreadlocks with extensions.

How long does it take?

The time will depend on how long and how thick your hair is. For average thickness, shoulder length hair I would allow up to 10 hours. We can split this work over 2 days. Finer hair may be quicker than this, and longer, thicker hair may be longer. I will need to see pictures of your hair to give you an accurate quote and time estimate.

How do you take care of your new dreadlocks?

Download a copy here of my free Care Guide for all the information you need to look after your new dreadlocks. After an initial settling in period, dreadlocks should be washed around once a week. Keeping your scalp and dreadlocks clean is really important for your own comfort and for the health and appearance of your dreadlocks. I recommend a natural, residue free shampoo and very minimal other products. Wax should never be used on dreadlocks! Visit Dreadshop and use code MEDUSA_DREADLOCKS for 10% off dreadlock safe products.

The most important things to look after your dreads is that they are washed, rinsed thoroughly and then allowed to dry as quickly as possible. Regular maintenance, every 2-4 months, is also highly recommended.

Your Investment for Natural Dreadlocks

The investment for a full head of natural dreadlocks will depend on how thick and long your hair is, and therefore how long it takes to create them all. This will vary from person and I will need to see clear pictures of your hair to give you an accurate quote. I work out the cost based on an hourly rate.

As a guide, average thickness, shoulder length hair will take approximately 10 hours and cost £550. Please send me pictures of your hair with your initial contact so I can give you accurate information faster.
